Growing up, I have fond memories of making paper bag puppets in my classroom. It was a simple and cost-effective way to express our creativity while having fun! With just a few brown paper bags and some basic craft supplies, we were able to create an entire menagerie of colorful animal puppets. I also loved putting on puppet shows.
Not only did these puppets provide hours of entertainment, but they also provided an opportunity for us to get creative and express our imaginations. It was a wonderful activity that I have treasured ever since. Today, I want to share this simple monkey paper bag puppet! It’s a lot of fun to make with your own little monkeys.

Today, I still enjoy making paper bag puppets with my own kids. There’s something special about the process of creating these fun characters together and watching their imaginations come to life. I’m proud that this activity has become a family tradition, and I hope it will continue for many years to come!
Paper bag puppets are an easy and inexpensive way to bring some creativity and fun into your home. All you need is a few simple supplies:
- Brown paper bag
- Pencil and scissors
- Quick dry tacky glue or school glue
- Monkey template file (found here) optional
- Add googly eyes to make the monkey extra silly
How to make the monkey puppet:
Print the monkey template file if you are choosing to use it. Of course, you can draw your own ears and eyes and let your imagination run wild. The template is a nice way to keep the pieces consistent, but they are relatively simple to draw out as well!
After cutting out the pieces from the template, use them to trace onto construction paper or cardstock. Then, cut the pieces out and glue them to the bag. It’s that simple!
Allow the puppet dry completely before playing or displaying. This is important! Nobody wants glue all over the house.

Honestly, paper bag puppet crafts never get old. They’re so much fun and you can create all sorts of fun characters. I also love how clutter-free they are! You can easily store them in a box and stow them away for later use. And, they look pretty darn cute on the fridge, too.
